Picasso once said that "When Matisse draws a line on a white piece of
paper, he draws it so perceptively, it doesn't remain just that; it
become something more. There's always a kind of metamorphosis of each
part that creates the whole". it is precisely this element of
transcendence that is present in the work of Simon Bull. When he
paints a flower it never remains just a flower, there is always
something beyond, leading the eye and the imagination of the viewer on
into the infinite. in this sense his work is very close to music,
abstract in it's interpretation but powerful to the emotions and
spiritually nourishing.
During his formative years, Simon worked very much within the English
tradition, using watercolour and drawing inspiration directly from
nature. Gradually however his work began to change. The commitment to
faithfully recording nature started giving way to a desire to
transcend representation and express with greater freedom something
that had its roots in the interior landscape. His colour palette grew
stronger and the marks and gestures became more expressive. The
pioneer of a new medium he has developed a method of overlaying
acrylics, pastels and foils onto original hand pulled etchings which
gives both a richly textured surface and unparalleled brilliance of
colour.
It has been said that his paintings are no longer of landscapes but
about landscape, not of musical instruments, but about the experience
of being swept away by music. No one who has ever been in love can
fail to respond to the warmth and beauty of this work.
Simon was short listed to receive the UK Best Selling Artist award in
1997 and has risen to National and International prominence with his
unique and highly innovative Artwork.
He has exhibited widely throughout the world and is represented in
many corporate and private collections including the British Royal
Family.
ARTIST'S COMMENTS
"God has been good to me, and I am grateful to Him for the gifts he
has given and enabled me to develop. It is through his loving kindness
and grace alone that I have been able to achieve anything of lasting
value and I pray that through my work the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ would be glorified".
